Propranolol is a beta-blocker medication commonly prescribed for:
- High blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
- Anxiety symptoms
- Tremors
- Certain heart conditions
In bodybuilding and physique sports, some athletes use it for specific reasons, especially around competitions or during heavy stimulant use.
Common reasons bodybuilders may use propranolol:
- Reducing shakiness/tremors from stimulants (such as caffeine or clenbuterol)
- Lowering heart rate
- Controlling performance anxiety before stepping on stage
- Reducing palpitations during aggressive cutting cycles
- Managing cardiovascular stress caused by stimulants or PEDs
It is most commonly used:
- During contest prep
- Before stage appearances or posing
- While using stimulants/fat burners
- During periods of high stress or anxiety
However, it also has risks and drawbacks.
Possible side effects:
- Fatigue and low energy
- Reduced exercise performance/endurance
- Dizziness
- Low blood pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Cold hands/feet
- Depression or mood changes
- Dangerous interactions with stimulants
In bodybuilding, propranolol is sometimes used to “mask” symptoms caused by stimulant abuse rather than fixing the underlying problem. Combining strong stimulants with beta-blockers can be risky because it may place unusual stress on the cardiovascular system.
For athletes, another important downside is that propranolol can reduce:
- Explosive power
- Training intensity
- Cardio capacity
because it limits heart-rate response during exercise.
Using it without medical supervision is not considered safe, especially when combined with PEDs, stimulants, dehydration, or extreme dieting.
